First spoils of the Summer to Mayo! Our U21s this afternoon retained their Connacht U21 title when they destroyed Roscommon by 1-22 to 1-8 in the Connacht final at McHale Park. The Rossies came into the match with high hopes, their team containing five of last year's All-Ireland winning minor side, but they were outplayed from start to finish by the defending Connacht and All-Ireland U21 champions. Mayo led by 1-10 to 1-5 at half-time but they pulled away impressively in the second half, winning in the end by a yawning 14-point margin. Pearce Hanley ran riot in the forward line, rattling over eight points, while Barry Moran put in a very strong performance at midfield. Both could now be in line for call-ups to the senior panel for the championship.
Next up for the young guns is a rematch of last year's U21 All-Ireland final. Cork today overcame Tipp in the Munster decider and so Mayo will be putting their All-Ireland title on the line against the Leesiders on 21st April, most likely in Limerick or Ennis.
