Yes, folks, we've reached that time of year again. Today marks the Summer solstice, the longest day of the year, with sunrise occurring (in these parts at any rate) at 04.55 and sunset at 21.57. Tomorrow morning, sunrise will have slipped back to 04.56 and the long run all the way to the Winter solstice, with the days shortening all the while, will have begun. Can the 2008 FBD League and NFL be far behind?

The longest day of the year
Yes, folks, we've reached that time of year again. Today marks the Summer solstice, the longest day of the year, with sunrise occurring (in these parts at any rate) at 04.55 and sunset at 21.57. Tomorrow morning, sunrise will have slipped back to 04.56 and the long run all the way to the Winter solstice, with the days shortening all the while, will have begun. Dark at 21:57???? I remember when I was a young buc out playing football at 11 o'clock at night and it was still bright at that stage. Those were the good old days.

That time only relates to when the sun sets - there'd still plenty of light left for kicking ball well after that. It's also sunset time in Dublin (where I'm domiciled now): according to the BBC, sunset in Claremorris this evening was at 22.10 which would make simulations of Connacht finals by young fellas at eleven perfectly feasible!
Thanks for the kind comments on the blog. I've been surviving on scraps of info during these long weeks since Salthill but, with the qualifiers now looming, things are about to get interesting again.
